Landscapes, Wildlife and the Transfrontier Kalahari
South Africa is a land of extraordinary contrasts, where every journey reveals a different face of nature. From the wildlife, rich plains of Kruger and the dramatic peaks of the Drakensberg to the rugged Karoo and the vast wilderness of the Transfrontier Kalahari, the country offers an endless succession of landscapes, moods and encounters.
One area that left a particularly strong impression on me was Pafuri, in the northern reaches of Kruger, where the landscape takes on a very different character. Here, yellow acacias and ancient baobabs punctuate the open terrain, creating remarkable silhouettes and giving the region an almost timeless atmosphere. The combination of trees, dry earth, wildlife and changing African light offered as many photographic possibilities as the animals themselves.
Through my lens, I have always tried to capture more than wildlife alone. It is the atmosphere of a place, the changing light, the drama of a storm, the silence of an open landscape and the intimate moments that unfold when an animal briefly forgets that it is being watched.
The Transfrontier Kalahari holds a very special place in this journey. Here, immense red earth, sparse vegetation and seemingly endless horizons create a wilderness of extraordinary solitude. Oryx moving across the dunes, predators resting beneath thorn trees, dust rising before an approaching storm and skies exploding with colour at sunset all became part of the visual story.
