Winter in Dovrefjell & Andenes
Winter in Norway has a way of stripping the landscape back to its essentials. Snow, wind, mountains and silence dominate the scene, creating an environment where wildlife has to endure rather than simply exist.
My journey took me to the rugged wilderness of Dovrefjell, in search of one of Scandinavia's most remarkable animals: the musk ox. Reaching them was never guaranteed. The weather could change within minutes, and walking through deep snow and freezing temperatures demanded preparation, endurance and, above all, patience.
On one of these outings, the conditions became more than I had anticipated. The cold and relentless wind eventually pushed me beyond my limits and I suffered hypothermia. Fortunately, I recovered safely, but the experience was a powerful reminder that in these environments nature sets the rules. You can prepare carefully, but you can never completely control what the wilderness will demand from you.
The reward came through encounters with the musk oxen themselves. Moving slowly across the frozen plateau, these prehistoric-looking animals seemed perfectly at home in conditions that challenged us. Watching them against the snow-covered mountains was a reminder of their extraordinary resilience and adaptation.
The journey continued north towards Andenes, where the landscape and wildlife changed again. The Arctic coast, winter light and open sea created another perspective on Norway's northern wilderness.
What stayed with me was not simply the photographs, but the experience of being immersed in an environment where survival, weather and wildlife are inseparably connected.
