Wild landscapes, wild wings
My journey through Scotland began with an invitation from a friend who, knowing my passion for wildlife photography, introduced me to a group of bird enthusiasts and breeders specialising in large birds of prey, including owls, falcons and buzzards. What began as an opportunity to photograph these remarkable birds soon became a much broader exploration of Scotland's wild landscapes and wildlife.
I was particularly drawn to the rugged coastline and the Scottish Highlands, where changing weather, dramatic skies and remote landscapes created an atmosphere very different from many of the places I had previously photographed.
The islands became one of the highlights of the journey. On the Isle of Mull and Lunga, I encountered extraordinary concentrations of seabirds, including guillemots, gulls and puffins, filling the cliffs and surrounding coastline with movement and sound. Being among such concentrations of wildlife made the experience as much about observing behaviour and anticipating movement as creating individual photographs.
Another memorable experience came through a private photographer who had constructed a series of photographic hides at almost water level beside a large pond. The position was carefully designed to allow photographers to observe ospreys diving for salmon at remarkably close range. Here, anticipation was everything. The dive itself lasted only moments; being ready before the bird entered the water was the real challenge.
Looking back, Scotland was a journey of contrasts, from intimate encounters with birds of prey to vast Highland landscapes, remote islands and noisy seabird colonies along the coast. It was a relatively quiet journey compared with some of my more demanding expeditions, but one filled with unexpected encounters, remarkable wildlife and the ever changing character of Scottish nature.
Scotland reminded me once again that good wildlife photography is rarely about simply finding an animal. It is about understanding its behaviour, anticipating the moment and being ready when everything comes together.

Scotland023 - Standing like small sentinels on the rocky cliffs, puffins use the coastline as a vital staging ground. From these high vantage points, they survey the surrounding ocean for predators, rest after exhausting fishing expeditions, and socialize with their lifelong mating partners before retreating down into safety.
Scotland024 - The flight back to the colony with a loaded beak is a perilous journey. As puffins approach the land, predatory birds wait in ambush, forcing the small, heavy auks to fly as fast as possible to reach the safety of the grassy slopes before they are spotted.
Scotland025 - Large gulls, such as the black-backed gull and herring gull, loiter aggressively around the puffin colonies. These clever birds rarely fish for themselves when they can simply exploit the hard work of the smaller puffins, using their sheer size and intimidation to steal meals.
Scotland026 - The danger does not end when a puffin touches down on the turf. Hungry gulls will physically track landing puffins, charging at them with open wings and sharp beaks to grab the sandeels right out of their mouths before the puffins can dive inside their nesting sites.
Scotland027 - Sneaky gulls use high coastal ferns and rocky outcrops as cover, sprinting out to ambush puffins the exact moment they touch down.
Scotland028 - Multiple gulls will occasionally surround a single, fish laden puffin, attacking from different angles until the overwhelmed bird surrenders its catch.
Scotland029 - In a striking and desperate display of aerial theft, a gull will swoop down directly onto a running puffin, practically landing on the smaller bird's shoulders. The heavy gull uses its weight to pin the puffin down, snapping viciously at its face to pry the small, dangling sandeels loose from its beak.
Scotland030 - To protect themselves and their offspring from harsh weather and relentless aerial predators, puffins do not build traditional nests out of twigs on open ledges. Instead, they utilize safe, hidden sanctuaries dug deep beneath the island's thick topsoil.
Scotland031 - At the deep end of the subterranean tunnel, puffins line a small nesting chamber with soft grass, leaves, and feathers. Here, safely hidden from the chaotic, dangerous world outside, the female lays a single white egg that both parents take turns incubating.
