The Land of Mist, Forests and Hidden Wildlife
Rwanda is a country where mist, mountains and forest seem to merge into one landscape. My journey took me into the Virunga Mountains, following the paths of mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and other remarkable primates.
Among the bamboo and dense vegetation, encounters with the gorillas became deeply personal. A mother protecting her infant, a silverback quietly watching over his family, young gorillas exploring their surroundings, these were not simply photographic opportunities. They were moments of observation and connection, where for a while the camera almost seemed secondary.
Beyond the forests, Rwanda revealed another face. Tea plantations covered the hillsides, mist drifted through the valleys and the volcanic silhouettes of the Virunga range constantly changed with the light. Every morning seemed to bring another landscape.
In Akagera National Park, the environment changed completely. Red earth roads crossed open savannah and wetlands, where elephants, rhinoceroses, buffalo and hippos shared the landscape with a remarkable variety of smaller wildlife. The park also offered a powerful example of what determined conservation can achieve, with wildlife returning to a landscape that has undergone enormous change.
What I particularly remember about Rwanda is the importance of looking beyond the obvious. A silverback may dominate the scene, but a young gorilla's hand, a bird moving through the vegetation or a caterpillar resting on a leaf can be equally compelling.
After so many years behind the camera, I have learned that wildlife photography is not always about finding the biggest or most spectacular subject. It is about being attentive to what is happening in front of you.
Rwanda brought together misty forests, extraordinary primates, changing landscapes and remarkable conservation success. But above all, it offered moments of quiet observation, moments in which the distance between photographer and wildlife seemed to become very small.
