Sometimes, the unexpected happens. We were late and already on our way back along the Transpantaneira road to our lodge in the Pantanal when a giant anteater crossed the road just ahead of us. It was the first one we had seen during our entire stay. We stopped the car immediately, jumped out, and instinctively began to follow the female as she moved into the grass.
As I got closer, I realized she was carrying a baby on her back—a moment so rare and intimate it took my breath away. There was no time to adjust camera settings, no time to think. I switched fast to continuous mode and started shooting, trusting instinct over preparation. The seconds felt fleeting, fragile, as if the scene could vanish at any moment.
When I finally looked through the images, I was stunned by the results. Once again, nature had reminded me that beyond patience, skill, and experience, a portion of luck is always helpful—sometimes essential—in wildlife photography.
