It can be very lively and rowdy near the hot springs, with people and monkeys crowded together in the steam and excitement. Yet occasionally, away from the noise, you discover the monkeys closer to the buildings where guests stay overnight.
These intelligent creatures gather there to seek shelter from the ice-cold winds and freezing temperatures. Pressed together for warmth, they create rare and intimate scenes that offer wonderful photographic opportunities. With some luck and patience, you may find perfect moments for truly great shots. I was fortunate to encounter two adults with a subadult, huddled tightly together, their expressions calm as they shared their precious body heat.
