Botswana, February 2013. We were in the Okavango Delta early in the morning and had decided to take a short break and have our breakfast in the shelter of low bushes. The surroundings were enchanting: an adult elephant and a group of lechwe antelopes were in the marsh at a short distance from where we were.
While we were enjoying this scene, this female leopard appeared completely unexpectedly from the low bushes right next to our vehicle. Stunned, as neither of us had noticed anything at all when we parked, she walked right beside our vehicle toward the open plain leading to the marsh where the lechwe antelopes were.
After moving about 30 meters away from us, she sat down and turned her head in our direction. The soft morning light tinted the grasses a light green and accentuated the pastel colors of this elusive animal.
