Zambia’s great national parks are known for their abundance, vast floodplains, powerful rivers, and wildlife moving freely across unfenced wilderness.
Yet during my journey through Kafue National Park, the Lower Zambezi, and South Luangwa, the landscape told a far more complex story. An anthrax outbreak had swept through parts of the region, leaving elephants, hippos, and buffalo where they had fallen, silent, stark forms within an otherwise timeless setting. The air itself carried the weight of it, shifting the experience of the bush in unexpected ways.
Even predators were affected. Lions, usually symbols of strength and ease, showed signs of distress, their movements subdued. Amid this difficult reality, conservation teams worked deep in the wilderness, treating animals with urgency and care, efforts that quietly restored a fragile balance.
In Kafue, the wild felt closer than ever. A lioness chose the space beneath my raised accommodation as shelter for herself and her two cubs. Each evening, I returned along a long wooden boardwalk, pausing in silence before stepping forward, reading the darkness and respecting her presence in the landscape.
This was not the Zambia of idealised wilderness. It was raw, confronting, and deeply real. As a photographer, I arrived in search of beauty, but left with something more lasting: a profound awareness of fragility, responsibility, and respect for the wild.
