Beyond the Expected
During a four month journey through South America, I had already travelled through Ecuador and Peru when I finally decided to make the journey into Bolivia. I had expectations, but the country quickly proved to be far more than I had imagined, particularly through the camera.
In Madidi National Park, I worked with Sergio Ah Apana, an exceptional guide whose knowledge of the forest seemed almost instinctive. He took me into the jungle after dark to photograph frogs and other nocturnal creatures. Photographing in complete darkness, surrounded by the sounds of the forest and knowing that pumas and jaguars were somewhere within it, demanded a different kind of concentration. Every beam of light revealed another small world.
I then spent five days at Serere Wildlife Refuge, where I met Rosa María Ruiz. Her dedication to protecting the rainforest made a lasting impression. I photographed her and some of the wildlife around the refuge, including a spider monkey. Those images became more than wildlife photographs; they also recorded the people working to ensure that such encounters remain possible.
From the rainforest, I travelled towards the highlands and eventually reached the Salar de Uyuni. I was exceptionally fortunate to arrive after rain had left a thin layer of water across the salt flats. The enormous white expanse became a perfect mirror, erasing the horizon. Suddenly, the landscape offered almost limitless possibilities for composition, reflection and abstraction.
Higher still, the conditions became increasingly demanding. At Laguna Colorada, around 5,000 metres, the light constantly transformed the colours and reflections of the water. Then, almost perfectly timed with my arrival, Andean flamingos began their remarkable display.
These were the moments I travel for: when place, light, timing, behaviour and a little luck come together in a single frame.
Bolivia taught me that the best photographic opportunities are often found beyond the expected, sometimes in the darkness of a rainforest, sometimes in a sheet of water across a desert, and sometimes at 5,000 meters, waiting for the light to change.
You cannot create those moments. You can only put yourself in the right place, stay alert, and be ready when they arrive.

BOL005 - Andean flamingo's stands poised in the cool, high-altitude light, its pale pink feathers glowing softly against the shimmering surface of the Andean lagoon. The bird lifts its head, eyes alert, as if listening for an ancient rhythm carried on the mountain wind. With a slow, deliberate grace, it begins to step side to side, long legs slicing through the shallow water. Ripples spread outward like the opening notes of a ceremony. Its wings unfurl just slightly, revealing flashes of deeper pink and black signals to nearby companions that the dance is about to begin. In this quiet moment, surrounded by silent peaks and thin air, the Andean flamingo seems to summon the timeless choreography of its species: a ritual of elegance, symmetry, and delicate movement that transforms the wild landscape into a living stage.

BOL012 - In the filtered light of a primeval swamp, the creature emerges, an ancient titan forged in the dawn of time. Its armored hide glistens like wet stone, each scale catching the sun as if remembering ages long forgotten. Heavy limbs press into the mud with a deliberate, rumbling power, sending tremors through the forest floor. Before it, the water lies still, holding its reflection like a portal to another era. The air hums with the same tension that must have filled prehistoric wetlands, when reptiles like this ruled unchallenged. For a moment, it feels as though the world has slipped backward through millennia, and I’m witnessing a survivor from the age of giants returning to its ancestral waters.
